Chiang, Mao, and the politics of unified command

Chiang Kai-shek created a unified Kuomintang command structure, while Mao Zedong paired a similar structure with a more reliable political cadre.

Notes

Chiang Kai-shek implemented a unified command structure for the Kuomintang, a major break from earlier Chinese fragmentation. His weakness was judging which subordinates could be trusted inside that system. Mao Zedong learned from the structure while building a tighter cadre of people whose loyalty he understood. The comparison shows that an organizational chart gains practical strength only when authority, trust, and political networks reinforce it.
