Fifteen miles of rowing to capture four Chesapeake schooners

A War of 1812 account follows Royal Navy boats through a long pursuit and a hard boarding action against four armed American schooners.

Notes

The Victorian narrative places Admiral John Warren and Rear Admiral George Cockburn's squadron in Chesapeake Bay in April 1813. When four armed American schooners escaped into a river during a calm, boats from the squadron rowed about fifteen miles in pursuit. The leading British boats boarded first and captured all four vessels after close fighting that cost casualties on both sides. Two of the schooners then entered Royal Navy service, illustrating how small-boat operations could convert local tactical success into additional coastal capability.
