Husayn's ships entered the Battle of Chaul piecemeal, allowing Lourenço de Almeida to defeat them in succession. Malik Ayaz then led a more disciplined local force into action and changed the balance. Lourenço withdrew rather than face a larger, well-handled fleet in the harbor. His ship struck an obstruction and went down under fire while covering the escape of the other Portuguese vessels. Survivors remembered his death as a sacrifice that saved them.
