Chapter ยท 5:12-8:45

Chatham-class design combines presence, speed, and firepower

Speed, armour, range, and eight six-inch guns made the Chathams credible against raiders and useful alongside larger warships.

Notes

The class could protect imperial sea routes, confront armed merchant raiders, and provide a stronger peacetime presence than a sloop without consuming a battlecruiser. Those routes were the maritime arteries of the British Empire, carrying commerce and wartime requirements that capital ships could not cover everywhere. A speed of about twenty-five knots let the ships work with most battlecruisers while remaining faster than contemporary dreadnoughts. Their gun arrangement put three weapons directly ahead and commonly five on useful bearings. The design's value came from combining speed, range, armour, and eight six-inch guns rather than maximising one exceptional statistic.
