Admiral of the Fleet Lord Chatfield's Navy and Defence is an informative account of his period as First Sea Lord. Memoirs can enlarge an author's role by omitting important colleagues, and Chatfield's failure to mention his Third Sea Lord provides the example here. The book is useful for naval policy and for practising source criticism.
