Chatfield, Henderson, and interwar carrier policy

Official records and later memoir claims are contrasted to question Chatfield's reputation as an early champion of carrier warfare.

Notes

Admiral Chatfield's later autobiography conflicts with contemporary Admiralty records. In this telling, Third Sea Lord Reginald Henderson drove carrier measures that Chatfield resisted or tried to stop. Chatfield was still questioning carrier construction in 1938 while favouring 14-inch-gunned battleships. The example shows why interwar leadership reputations need to be checked against procurement files rather than accepted from memoirs alone.
