Chapter · 20:18-22:14

Gun arcs, Harvey steel, and three-shaft redundancy

Châteaurenault combined centerline main guns, forward-firing wing mounts, Harvey-steel protection, and three shafts in a promising but lightly protected raider layout.

Notes

The cruiser carried her largest guns on the centerline fore and aft, with secondary weapons in wing positions that widened the firing arcs. The forward sponsons could concentrate fire ahead, although extreme arcs also raised the risk of blast or projectiles affecting the ship herself. Harvey steel provided good protection for its time even if it did not equal newer Krupp armor. Three engines driving three shafts gave useful propulsion redundancy if one machinery line failed. The layout was promising only if France repeated and supported it instead of turning the ship into another isolated experiment.
