Chapter · 28:22-31:27

East Asia service and conversion to minelayer

Châteaurenault served on the China station, returned to the Far East, entered reserve, and was converted into a fast minelayer in 1908.

Notes

After commissioning, the cruiser joined French forces in East Asia and later returned alongside Guichen before a short second deployment. Her movement among several other French cruisers shows how an overseas station operated as a changing force rather than a single-ship assignment. Reserve status led to conversion as a fast minelayer in 1908, extending the usefulness of a hull designed for a fading commerce-raider concept. Liner styling offered little concealment for a ship maneuvering back and forth to lay a minefield. By 1911 Châteaurenault was back in a Mediterranean reserve division at Toulon.
