Charlotte's slow voyage, medal, and later service

Charlotte's slow passage, uncertain convict complement, commemorative medal, tea voyage, and later service trace a chartered transport beyond arrival.

Notes

Charlotte was a slow merchant ship and had to be towed down the Channel to keep pace with the fleet. Two days after departure, her crew discovered that the third mate had been left at Plymouth, and Hyena supplied an experienced replacement. The records give two possible divisions of roughly 108 convicts between men and women, so the exact complement remains uncertain. Surgeon John White commissioned convict Thomas Barrett to make the Charlotte Medal for those who survived the voyage. Charlotte later sailed with Scarborough to China for an East India Company tea cargo and was taken up again for British service during the 1806 expedition against the Dutch Cape Colony.
