The 29-ship Charles F. Adams family included American and overseas orders. Using the Forrest Sherman design as a basis reduced the risk of developing the new destroyers. The missile fit developed from the Mark 11 launcher to the later single-arm Mark 13, which could handle Standard missiles and Harpoon. Two 5-inch/54 guns, ASROC, and triple Mark 32 torpedo mounts supplied gun and ASW armament. These were the last steam-turbine destroyers built for the US Navy. They became a backbone of the carrier-centered task-group force, while older ships underwent modifications.
