Charles de la Cerda turns disputed lineage into French power

A Franco-Castilian noble descended from a disinherited claimant uses family prestige abroad and rises to become constable of France.

Notes

Charles de la Cerda was a Franco-Castilian noble whose family retained influence despite his grandfather's disinheritance. That lineage left him close enough to a royal succession to possess prestige and connections, but without an inheritance on which he could rely. He had to turn borrowed family power into an independent career while those relationships remained useful. His eventual elevation to constable of France, the king's senior right hand, shows how aristocratic networks crossed kingdoms and made a Castilian commander central to French policy.
