The convoy turns naval defeat into national defeat

Because the troop transports carry the army intended for the western offensive, losing the Channel battle can end Germany's war rather than merely destroy its fleet.

Notes

The liner plan concentrates a very large part of the German army in overloaded transports alongside the High Seas Fleet. The trapped force could lose its troops to death or capture while torpedo craft and capital ships fought at close quarters around it. Germany would then lose both its fleet and the army's principal western striking force. Lacking the means to continue the war, it could seek peace before Christmas.
