Why changing special-forces names complicate the story

The same raiders passed through overlapping organisations and labels, making unit names less reliable than the people and operations they describe.

Notes

Administrative labels are one of the hardest parts of this history. The people and raids can often be identified more confidently than the unit name applied at a given date. The Special Boat Section, Folding Boat Section, SAS, and other organisations formed, merged, changed names, or disappeared while the war was still under way. Following the people and operations avoids treating every reference to "SBS" as one continuous organisation.
