Age of Sail combat required more than firing round shot until one hull failed. Chain shot was the long-range choice for cutting sails, rigging, and masts so that the opponent lost manoeuvrability. As the range closed, solid round shot became useful for battering the hull and throwing dangerous wooden splinters through the ship. At very close range, grape shot could sweep exposed decks and reduce resistance before a boarding attempt. The game model is imperfect, but the sequence connects ammunition selection to distance and tactical purpose.

Chain, round, and grape shot as a tactical sequence
The ammunition choice changes as ships close: chain shot attacks mobility, round shot damages the hull, and grape shot prepares an enemy deck for boarding.
