Cawdor turns negotiation into an unconditional-surrender bluff

Cawdor rejected a conditional surrender, claimed superior strength, and displayed his whole mixed force while artillery prepared behind it.

Notes

French officers approached Cawdor's headquarters at the Royal Oak seeking a conditional surrender. Cawdor claimed superior strength and demanded unconditional surrender by 10 a.m. on 24 February, threatening an attack if Tate refused. The next morning he formed his mixed force on Goodwick Sands while artillery crews visibly prepared their guns. The defenders then stood without maneuvering as Tate tried to delay, presenting an army ready to attack.
