Who died aboard Titanic

The casualty pattern shows uneven survival by sex, class, and role, along with the close personnel connection between the merchant marine and the Royal Navy.

Notes

Male crew and third-class men faced the worst survival prospects, partly because they formed such a large share of those aboard. Senior officers also suffered heavily, including Captain Edward John Smith, Chief Officer Henry Wilde, First Officer William Murdoch, and Sixth Officer James Moody. Most of Titanic's deck officers simultaneously held commissions in the Royal Naval Reserve. That overlap shows how merchant-sea experience fed naval mobilization before the First World War.
