Cassin begins the thousand-tonner line

Four Cassin-class destroyers began the thousand-tonner line while the Navy was also laying down the Nevada class and starting its standard battleship program.

Notes

Four Cassin-class destroyers began the US Navy's thousand-tonner line between 1912 and 1915. All four were laid down in 1912. Most entered commission in August or September 1913, while Downes did not enter commission until 1915. Boiler arrangements varied, but the class paired capable machinery with 4-inch/50-calibre guns. At the same time, the Navy was beginning the standard battleship program, laying down the Nevadas in October and November 1912. Four Aylwins followed, so escort growth remained modest beside capital-ship construction.
