Chapter · 39:49-48:21

Rowley and HMS Montagu at Cartagena

At Cartagena, the twenty-four-year-old Rowley helps capture one French ship and drive another ashore while Osborn pursues the flagship.

Notes

When three French ships scattered before Henry Osborn's four ships of the line, Rowley's HMS Montagu helped exploit the separation. The French decision converted a modest four-to-three British advantage into three isolated fights. Montagu took a leading role in overpowering one opponent and driving Oriflamme ashore while Osborn and Monmouth pursued Foudroyant. Rowley's contribution impressed Osborn enough that the admiral specified Montagu should appear prominently in the commemorative painting.
