The 1741 Cartagena attack combined naval bombardment with an assault by grenadiers. Ships of the line could engage coastal forts before grenadiers went directly up the beach and into the batteries. Grenadiers were selected for height and physical strength because their original role required carrying and throwing grenades. Those qualities also made them a natural heavy assault element for exploiting the opening created by naval gunfire.
