Carrier size pays for systems, stores, and people

The difference between a token flight deck and a sustainable carrier capability lies in internal volume for lifts, magazines, medical care, aircraft support, and crew fitness.

Notes

Carrier size changes what the ship can actually sustain beyond its appearance. A Second World War comparison between escort carriers, light fleet carriers, and fleet carriers shows that the categories already encoded different air-group scales and operational demands. Lifts, hangars, magazines, stores, accommodation, hospitals, and gyms all compete for internal volume, while months at sea make crew health facilities operational necessities. HMS Albion and HMS Bulwark illustrate the danger of narrow cost cutting because their planned helicopter hangars and hospital decks were removed for relatively small savings. The decision mattered more as Britain later fell from several aviation decks to two Queen Elizabeth-class carriers, leaving less redundancy for expeditionary operations.
