The Suez carrier force combined ships and aircraft that had not existed before the beginning of the decade. This new force took the lead in operations and largely destroyed the Egyptian air force on the ground. Very few navies or states in the 1950s could have mounted a comparable effort. Rapid postwar investment had produced a rare capacity to project concentrated naval air power overseas.
