Carrier strike exercises and dive-bombing practice

Royal Navy exercises tested carrier attacks on carriers and battleships while fighters practiced a secondary dive-bombing role.

Notes

Policing was not the only role being developed for British carrier aircraft. Royal Navy exercises staged carrier-against-carrier and carrier-against-battleship engagements in which torpedo bombers and bombers attempted simulated hits. Fighter aircraft, especially Fairey Flycatchers, also practiced dive-bombing runs. Strike doctrine was emerging through fleet exercises even while reconnaissance, spotting, and policing remained central everyday functions.
