Why British strike brigades depend on carrier aviation

The case for lighter strike brigades is tied to F-35 ground attack and the sortie capacity of Queen Elizabeth-class carriers.

Notes

The planned British strike brigades are criticised for being short of armour and dependent on air support. The F-35 is favoured for ground attack over a Typhoon adapted from its fighter role, while Tempest remains a future project in this March 2021 comparison. Queen Elizabeth-class carriers supply the sortie capacity needed to use that support on worldwide operations. On that argument, the Army has a direct interest in supporting F-35 procurement and carrier strike because its own force concept depends on them.
