A carrier's defensive fit must account for combat effect and for what the ship can mount, supply, maintain, test, and crew over its life. SeaRAM offers automated point defence, but heavy missiles and other hard-kill systems can scatter debris that interrupts flight-deck operations. Too much reliance on electronic warfare can leave the ship without enough physical interception, while too much onboard missile fire can undermine the aviation mission. Because the carrier extends a task group's range and command reach, it remains the highest-value target and needs a credible final layer after fighters and escorts.
