Chapter ยท 8:12-12:38

Carrier-cruiser scouting groups for Pacific distances

Northamptons, other fast cruisers, carriers, destroyers, and seaplane bases form a reconnaissance screen ahead of the battle fleet.

Notes

An early Pacific concept called for three scouting groups, each built around a carrier, three cruisers, and accompanying destroyers. They would range ahead of the battle fleet to find and fix the enemy while remaining mobile enough to avoid the main battle. Three Northamptons were designed as fleet flagships and three as divisional or squadron flagships, allowing task-force commanders to operate from cruisers while carrier admirals directed aviation. Seaplane tenders could establish temporary island bases and extend the reconnaissance screen, so speed, range, command space, and aviation facilities mattered more than armor.
