Why a supercarrier can overwhelm a smaller navy

A platform that works for the U.S. Navy's scale can consume the crews, trainers, shore staff, and budget of a much smaller navy.

Notes

The largest American nuclear carriers suit the scale of the U.S. Navy, but they could overwhelm many allied fleets. Two such ships would demand roughly ten thousand embarked personnel before counting the shore establishment, instructors, replacements, and intelligence support needed to sustain them. The Royal Australian Navy's regular and reserve personnel totals illustrate how quickly two American supercarriers could absorb almost an entire smaller service. Procurement must account for the capability lost elsewhere when personnel and training are concentrated in one very large platform.
