Carrier construction expanded into Mitsubishi's Nagasaki yard

Kasagi's construction at Nagasaki shows how the emergency program brought a major yard into large-carrier work and widened Japan's production base.

Notes

Kasagi reached about 84 percent completion at Mitsubishi's Nagasaki shipyard before work stopped in April 1945. Mitsubishi had built carriers for the Imperial Japanese Navy before, but that earlier work was associated with Yokohama rather than Nagasaki. Assigning a major carrier to Nagasaki therefore expanded the set of facilities able to participate in this demanding form of construction. The wider program also drew on Yokosuka, Kure, and Kawasaki's Kobe yard instead of depending on a single specialized site. This industrial expansion was real, even though shortages of aircraft and trained people prevented the additional hull capacity from becoming equivalent combat power.
