Carrier patrols and warning in a Pedestal novel

A fictional Pedestal scene follows interception, reconnaissance reports, a Fulmar fire and the strain of waiting between sorties.

Notes

In Matthew Willis's novel, a Sea Hurricane pilot returns from an interception without firing, but his flight has still helped drive an enemy aircraft towards another flight. His frustration gives way to a discussion of how a smaller defensive force can disrupt a much larger attack. When a reconnaissance aircraft escapes, it remains free to report the convoy's position and strength. A Fulmar launching from Victorious then catches fire and ditches, reducing the fighter force before the main battle. Igniting ammunition is suggested as a possible cause. The scene also follows the cold and anxiety between sorties, with standing patrols and standby aircraft serving different immediate needs.
