Carrier mass improves hit probability

Concentrating carriers increased the chance that enough bombs and torpedoes would land on critical parts of the American fleet despite misses and ineffective hits.

Notes

British, American and Japanese officers considered multi-carrier operations as their fleets acquired enough carriers to use them together. Genda's claim to exceptional originality is challenged on that basis. The British carrier system in particular is described as organized around operating several carriers. Concentration also addressed weapon accuracy: destroying a target required explosives to reach vulnerable places. Misses and hits on less important areas increased the number of aircraft needed. More carriers could supply that weight of attack, provided the force could still preserve surprise.
