Carrier power depends on the logistical tail

The farther and longer a carrier group must fight, the larger the supply system required to keep its aircraft and escorts effective.

Notes

A large American carrier is the centre of a strike group that also includes escorts, submarines, and supply vessels. The familiar debate over military teeth and tail can make support forces look like dispensable overhead. Combat forces cannot keep fighting without ammunition, food, and water. The required logistical tail grows with both the distance to the theatre and the duration of operations. American carrier doctrine remains effective only when the surrounding system can sustain its range and firepower.
