Carrier hangars provide adaptable volume

Later Kamov helicopters broadened the Kiev class's roles, while large hangars offered space that navies could adapt as their requirements changed.

Notes

Ka-27s and Ka-29s later supplemented the original Ka-25s for different roles. The Soviet Navy kept finding additional uses for its aviation ships as it gained experience. A carrier's hangar is a large space whose use can change with the equipment placed inside. The Danish Absalon class's flex deck applies the same idea of adaptable internal volume without serving as a carrier hangar.
