Why were ships within carrier groups often organized by service or class?
Short answerSimilar ships make logistics, command, and coordinated manoeuvre easier.
NotesHomogeneous groups simplify logistics, command and manoeuvre. Ships with similar speed and turning characteristics respond to orders on roughly the same timetable. That makes coordinated course changes and formation keeping easier than with a mixed group. The grouping is chosen for how the force operates, regardless of whether the opponent ultimately engages it. Standardisation is therefore an operational advantage as well as an administrative one.
