Could Pensacola accompany Lexington and Saratoga?

Pensacola's speed and Pacific range become more intelligible if the cruiser was expected to accompany Lexington and Saratoga or work across the scouting and battle fleets.

Notes

The US Navy had not settled where its new cruisers belonged in the wider operational system. One possibility was to inherit some functions planned for battlecruisers, while another was to escort the aircraft carriers Lexington and Saratoga and act in concert with them. On that reading, speed served the practical purpose of keeping up with fast carriers, while long range supported work with scouting or battle fleets across Pacific distances. These requirements make sense as answers to an unresolved force-structure problem rather than as isolated specifications.
