Carrier choices and the Adamant frigate's limitations

The Adamant depends heavily on its fighter squadron, while a battlestar offers the all-round fighting value that makes a separate carrier hard to justify.

Notes

A dedicated carrier is hard to justify beside a battlestar when the capital ship is the only genuinely versatile combatant available. A cheaper carrier could make sense in principle, but the game's limited fleet capacity makes every slot compete directly for combat value. Much of the Adamant's utility comes from the single fighter squadron it brings, while its own forward and rear firepower remains weak. A hangar is valuable, but it does not excuse neglecting the basic defensive arcs of the hull carrying it.
