Carrier categories are defined here by mission capacity rather than tonnage alone. An escort or ASW carrier concentrates on one main task, a light fleet carrier can sustain roughly two, and larger fleet or supercarriers support more simultaneous missions. Charles de Gaulle falls into the light-fleet category because the dockyard selected for construction constrained its size. The planned French successor can use a larger yard and therefore move toward the full fleet-carrier scale. Industrial infrastructure can shape the operational category a navy is able to build.

Escort, light fleet, fleet, and supercarrier labels are most useful when they describe how many missions an air group can sustain.
