How carrier losses reshaped fleet availability far beyond Taranto

Losing Courageous and Glorious reduced early-war carrier options, which in turn affected battleship exposure, maintenance schedules, Home Fleet strength, and later Far East deployments.

Notes

The earlier losses of Courageous and Glorious broaden the readiness problem beyond Eagle. More surviving carriers in the Mediterranean could have inflicted heavier damage on the Italian fleet sooner, reducing the number of British battleships needed there as protection. Fewer capital ships at Alexandria would also mean fewer targets exposed to attacks such as Italian human torpedoes. Those changes could alter when ships entered maintenance, what remained with the Home Fleet, and what could later be sent to the Far East. A shortage in one ship type could therefore reshape force allocation across several theatres.
