Farragut's force did not leave the captured CSS Tennessee as a disabled prize. Naval personnel repaired the ironclad, recommissioned it as USS Tennessee, and quickly returned it to useful service. Its armor and heavy guns then joined Union ships bombarding Fort Morgan, turning a central Confederate asset against the remaining defense. The rapid reuse reflects the repair and technical culture Farragut had practiced in ordnance work and at Mare Island.
