Capital-ship design was moving from ships optimized for a single battle line toward ships expected to fight a war of maneuver. Mobile operations increased the value of speed and firing arcs that could answer threats ahead or astern, weakening the case for an all-forward main battery. Japanese planners remained committed to wearing down an approaching enemy before concentrating their battleships for a decisive engagement. Once attrition brought the fleets nearer to numerical parity, individually superior Japanese ships were expected to decide the battle. Yamato's moderate speed therefore fitted a doctrine in which the enemy approached Japan, rather than a mission requiring pursuit of independent enemy forces.
