A capital-ship refit is a weight-budget exercise

Refitting a Lord Nelson-type battleship forces a trade between speed, protection, fire control, shell choice, range, and stability.

Notes

The Lord Nelson-type refit can add radar, modern fire control, improved explosives, and revised shells, but each desired change consumes tonnage. The initial upgrade package adds roughly two thousand tons, forcing a decision about which original qualities can be sacrificed. Speed, armour, conning-tower protection, shell weight, and the hull are adjusted in search of better stability. The exercise shows why capital-ship modernisation is an interconnected weight-budget problem rather than a simple list of upgrades.
