Treaty labels did not make capital ships equivalent

Treaty categories could group heavy warships together, but battlecruisers, battleships, and fast battleships still differed sharply in protection and staying power.

Notes

Treaty categories could group heavy warships together, but they did not erase real differences in protection. A battlecruiser remained more vulnerable than a battleship even when both counted as capital ships. A fast battleship sat nearer the battleship side of that divide because it was intended to absorb and return heavier punishment. The distinction mattered when Britain decided which units could reliably confront German surface raiders.
