Lucius Manlius Vulso Longus, Regulus's fellow consul at Ecnomus, had pursued the consulship several times and led military expeditions during both successful terms. His second consulship brought severe losses when a storm destroyed about 150 ships, after which he helped reorganize the Roman army. He appears to have been especially effective at recruiting sailors, making him one of the Republic's closest approximations to a specialist naval leader. His career also shows how Rome could reuse experienced commanders despite annual magistracies.
