Interpreting the fourth squadron as veteran triarii

The fourth squadron's triarii name and rearward position support a cautious interpretation that veteran Roman infantry helped hold the fleet's base.

Notes

Polybius calls the Roman fourth squadron the triarii, using the name of the veteran third line in a manipular legion. Its rear position and resistance to attack support an interpretation that it carried experienced veterans. The same reconstruction places principes in the first and second squadrons and younger hastati with the horse transports in the third. Younger soldiers could help the rowers when towing demanded extra effort. These proposed assignments remain deductions from the squadron names, positions, and roles.
