Rome built more than a thousand galleys during the Punic Wars and gained experience through repeated construction. Fleets were lost and replaced throughout that process. After Cape Hermaeum, the Romans captured 114 Carthaginian ships. On the return to Italy, a storm destroyed 384 ships and killed about 100,000 men. The abandonment of the corvus followed this disaster.
