Regulus's family and the aftermath of his death

Stories about Marcia's retaliation and repeated family names complicate the traditions surrounding Regulus.

Notes

Marcia reportedly responded to her husband's death by torturing Carthaginian prisoners. The story gives Regulus's wife an active role in the reprisals surrounding his death. Both of his sons became consuls. Repeated use of the name Gaius Atilius Regulus makes the family difficult to follow: one bearer was his son, while an older relative is identified in different accounts as his brother or cousin.
