Hanno's priorities expose Carthage's divided war strategy

Hanno favored African expansion over an expensive struggle with Rome, illustrating how elite interests fragmented Carthaginian naval policy.

Notes

Hanno the Great was a wealthy landholder whose faction preferred conquest in Africa to war with Rome. Ancient historians connect that preference to his personal interests, though their hostile judgments require caution. He later demobilized the navy and, in this account, gave Rome space to rebuild after its losses. He refused payments promised to mercenaries by Hamilcar Barca, then failed to defeat their revolt alone. The rivals eventually joined forces to suppress it.
