Hamilcar, identified by his fortification of Drepana, came to Ecnomus with a mixed record. Surprise and useful intelligence helped him defeat Rome's allies at Thermae, while traitors helped him capture Enna and Camarina. A later naval encounter brought losses against Rome, and at Ecnomus he failed to prevent the landing in Africa. Recalled from Sicily, he was then defeated again by Regulus at Adys. This was a different commander from Hamilcar Barca.
