HMNZS Canterbury already fills much of an Absalon-like support role, but it cannot serve as a third frigate. An Absalon-derived replacement could combine command facilities, troop and supply lift, and enough combat capability to reinforce two dedicated frigates. The proposed frigates draw on the Type 31 or Iver Huitfeldt approach, with a StanFlex-style modular fit suited to New Zealand's scale. This three-hull core would normally leave two fighting ships available. The proposal accepts New Zealand's limited scale while extracting more operational flexibility from each hull.

Canterbury, Absalon, and a three-ship New Zealand combat force
HMNZS Canterbury and the Danish Absalon and Iver Huitfeldt families support a proposal for a small New Zealand force in which one support ship can reinforce two combat frigates.
