Canaris biographies and the limits of a repeated claim

An uncertain claim of descent from a Greek admiral becomes a lesson in distinguishing repeated biographical colour from evidence-backed history.

Notes

Canaris was born in 1887 to the wealthy industrialist Carl Canaris. He believed that his family descended from the nineteenth-century Greek admiral and politician Konstantinos Kanaris, though establishing the relationship would require much more work. The claim appears in multiple books, but repetition does not verify it. Its inclusion also reveals the journalistic preference for vivid personal details in several Canaris biographies.
