Canarias as Nationalist flagship in the Civil War

Canarias is credited with 34 sinkings during the Civil War, alongside attacks on destroyers and the capture of a liner for Nationalist service.

Notes

The account credits Canarias with sinking 34 ships during the Civil War, including the destroyer Almirante Ferrándiz at Cape Espartel and a Soviet merchant vessel. As Nationalist flagship she also fought at Cape Machichaco. In 1938 she damaged the destroyer José Luis Díez and forced it to seek refuge at Gibraltar. She captured the Republican liner Mar Cantábrico, which was subsequently converted for Nationalist service. The liner appears to have become an auxiliary cruiser used mainly to support other ships, although that description is recalled tentatively.
