Panama Canal limits shape the American concept

Panama Canal dimensions link beam and draft to the American battleship's speed, propulsion, armament, and protection.

Notes

Panama Canal passage is a hard design constraint. A narrower beam and reduced draft preserve mobility between the Atlantic and Pacific, but leave less room and displacement for guns, machinery, and protection. The proposed ship therefore combines canal-compatible dimensions with turbo-electric machinery and a 25-knot target, above the planned South Dakotas' 23 knots. Geography shapes the battleship before its combat qualities are tested.
